Sick ferret?

I Wish I had a Ferret!!!!!!!!!

by Farrahn
(Washington)

I'm 13 and I want a ferret soooooo bad!

My mom is kinda squemish and we have a parakeet, 2 cats, a dog, and 6 chickens. She thinks that she is the only one who takes care of them, but she doesn't care about them. My other parakeet died a month a go and I still cry when I think about it, but when I told her about it, she just said that she was sorry like it was just my loss!

I just moved down to the basement, and there is a whole unfurnished room with laminate flooring that would be PERFECT for a ferret or two... I really want to be a vet when I grow up so this would be the perfect oppertunity to interact with all kinds of animals, plus my science teacher last year had rats and we got to hold them before class. They loved me the best!!!!!!!!!!

The pet stores in my area don't carry ferrets, so I think I should get one from an animal shelter somewhere. I'm so excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wish I had a Ferret
by: JC

From the other comments here, they are so right on !!!

Ferrets can be & in most cases are very costly.
I have had 8 sweeties. I now have 5. 3 of my babies have passed away from Adernal disease & insulinoma.

I have one old gal, Zoie, who has Adrenal disease & Insulinoma and the vet bills have been high.

They need the best food you can buy to stay healthy & clean cages & plenty of room to play when they are up.

You sound like a very responsable young boy & I too would suggest that you do your research & plan ahead.

Good luck, I'm sure when you do get your baby you will be a wonderful ferret owner.

Know what you are getting into
by: Anonymous

Ferrets really are lot of fun but a very big responsibility. They are very high maintenance animals. Around the age of 3 to 5 they start to have problems. I just had a ferret pass away from adrenal disease and my other ferrets have it too. One just had surgery last month and the other will be going in for surgery soon. Probably next Friday.

You sound really excited about getting this ferret and I don't want to talk you out of it but you really need to know what you are getting into before you do it. They are very expensive pets. They get into everything. My first ferret ate the rubber feet off of a foot massager and got a blockage in her intestines. The vet bill just for that was $300. The surgeries have been twice that or more. That doesn't count special medicine or visits that they have had to take related to the adrenal disease.

I suggest getting the book Ferrets for Dummies and reading everything on this website before you get the ferret. You could also suggest that your mother read it too. Maybe she won't be so squeamish.
