I need help

I have a ferret, Zelda. She usually sleeps most the day comes out maybe once in awhile to eat and go to the bathroom. She has moments of the day where she is hyper, but lately she hasn’t been sleeping at all or eating barely, She maybe sleeps for 5-8 mins then she’s wide awake the rest of the day. She has been up for a whole week running around licking us and biting. She steals dog food from our dogs and we try to keep it away from her, but she still manages to get ahold of it. She won’t leave us alone either she is constantly following us like crazy. Up and under our feet.

I think she’s about 4 years old maybe 5. We’ve had her for 2-3 years and we have never had this problem. She has never been caged up except when we first got her. She roams around the house. She has also been pooping like crazy and everywhere. Like in the middle of the kitchen floor. She has never done this before. She use to just go in corners on newspaper.

In her poop I’m not sure what it is, but it looks to be blood. Maybe it’s the dog food I’m not really sure. Her poop sometimes is orange, but definitly not its normal shade. I honestly don’t know what is wrong with her.

A vet visit would be the first step !!

Keeping her away from the dog dish, the dye in the dog food might be why her poo is red or orange in color, you didn’t say whether it was runny or solid??

As for her following you around she just need some attention & if you don’t have another ferret for her to play with then it’s you she wants to play with. I found my ferrets picked their own time to be awake. When I worked it was in the mornings that they wanted out, they do tend to adjust to their humans routine.

It’s true when they get older or if they become sick they do tend to poo wherever they are.

Sounds like you have a normal ferret in motion.

YOU SHOULD TAKE THE FERRET TO YOUR VET. THAT DEALS WILL FERRETS HAVE THEN RUN A TEST ON THE STOOL. IT COULD BE THE FERRET FOOD YOU ARE FEEDING YOUR FERRET TRY TOTAL FERRET FOOD FOR OLDER FERRETS IT IS A GREEN BAG. THEY CAN EAT DOG FOOD BUT IT DEPEND ON WHAT BRAND. BUT GET THE FERRET TO A VET.

As ferrets get older they do tend to poop where it suits, rather than backing into corners, so I wouldn’t be too worried about her doing that.

I do know that, with a ferret’s short digestive tract, what goes in usually comes out with the same colors so it could well be that the orange in her poop is from the dog food. Make sure she can’t get any for 24 hours and see if her poop looks normal. If it doesn’t, then you should take her to a vet to get checked over. Obviously blood in her poop would not be a good thing.

Maybe Zelda is just lonely and that’s why she’s following you around so much? My guys are all free roam and they have their moments … occasionally coming to find me to say hi, other times ignoring me. To be honest, I don’t know if it’s a symptom of illness but it doesn’t sound like it would be. However … again … if you’re worried, please take her to the vet to be checked out.

Zelda sounds like a delightful little thing so I hope she’s in good health and continues to be a part of your family for many more years to come 🙂

  2. Felicia, if you’re worried about your little man then please take him to a ferret vet to be checked out.
I don’t think he would have hurt himself if he dropped to the ground from that level but if he landed awkwardly, then maybe he might have done something to his leg or something.
Does he limp? Is he just lying and not playing? Anything to show that he’s not himself?
If so, please find a good ferret vet and take him there. That’s all I can advise from half a world away 🙁
Hope your little guy will be fine 🙂
    Cheers
