Alopecia in Ferrets

Ferrets can suffer from alopecia, which is also known as hair loss.

Here is a list of some of the reasons why ferrets might lose their hair:-

Adrenal problems
Allergy to flea bites
Moulting in late summer / early autumn
Hair loss on the tail could be caused by “blackheads”
Feeding your ferret too many raw egg whites
Being in heat for too long (prolonged estrus) in unsterilized females

If you notice that your ferret's loss of hair is more than just seasonal shedding, then whisk him to your vet so that he can figure out what the cause is.

There’s a good article on hair loss written by Judith Bell on the Pet Education website.

Another interesting article on alopecia in the ferret can be found at the NFWS website.
